Pfizer, the world’s biggest drug maker, on Thursday said it would cut costs for the company by 20 per cent, while also lowering its sales of Viagra.
Pfizer will now pay a 20 per cent charge to resolve legal issues relating to its erectile dysfunction drug Viagra.
The deal, announced yesterday, will see the sale of the drug by Pfizer and its partner, Eli Lilly and Company.
The move follows the U. S. Supreme Court's decision in Lilly and Company Inc. v. Pfizer Inc.
The agreement was announced in a news release by Pfizer’s CEO, John R. Kennedy.
Pfizer’s chief executive officer, John R. Kennedy, said in the release that Pfizer would “make a great success” in the erectile dysfunction drug market by “ensuring the availability and affordability of this medication in our country.”
Pfizer has long faced the challenges of its patent challenges and facing legal challenges related to its patent on a drug that Pfizer has been promoting for decades.
Pfizer’s patent for Viagra is valid until 2020, but patent expirations can be delayed if they are deemed to be in violation of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. The drug is also approved for sale in the United States and Europe for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
Viagra is Pfizer’s leading medication, with sales of more than $1 billion in the U. in the past 20 years.
Pfizer has been fighting for decades against cheaper generic versions of Viagra, which are made by Pfizer. Viagra’s patent protection extends until 2020 and expires in 2017, giving Pfizer an option for Viagra’s generic competitor, Cialis.
Pfizer has also been fighting a patent challenge from an earlier U. judge, who has ruled that Pfizer’s Viagra is not covered by the Food and Drug Administration.
In 2011, after a dispute over the validity of a patent for the drug, Pfizer sued the company in federal court in Chicago, claiming that its patent for Viagra expired in 2010, giving it an unfair monopoly, in violation of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. A decision in the case was later upheld by the U. Supreme Court.

We’re in the middle of a big news story. A number of major companies are launching generic versions of erectile dysfunction drugs like Viagra and Cialis (tadalafil) in the next few months. And the list of these new generic versions is not a long one, but it’s getting closer.
“We are in a great position because we are able to get these new products and be able to get more of them on the U. S. market,” said Paul J. Klee, a drug pricing analyst at CMC Securities. “They will be able to sell more of them. We expect it will become a more generic version of the brand, but we don’t know the exact number yet.”
In other news, Pfizer Inc. is launching its first generic version of erectile dysfunction drugs Viagra, Cialis and Levitra in the US. The drugmaker is also selling its own branded version of Viagra. The generic version of Viagra costs $69.99 per month, while the branded version costs $74.49.
Pfizer is already on a list of drugs that are available to purchase by those who don’t have prescriptions to fill. Pfizer is one of about 100 companies that has been approved by the U. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market the drugs for more than five years. The FDA approved the drugs in 2003 and 2013, but they are only approved for use by patients with certain medical conditions.
“There are some other drugs that are more of an option than others,” Klee said. “The companies are already very aggressive in this effort to get to that point.”
Pfizer also is making a generic version of Lipitor, a popular type of heart medication that can work as well as a brand-name drug. Lipitor is available in the US as Lipitor XR and Lipitor LA. Lipitor and Lipitor XR work by improving blood flow to the penis, while Lipitor LA is a medication used to temporarily eliminate plaque in the arteries. The drugs aren’t approved for use in children under 12.
“This is a very important drug for people with heart conditions and we are working with a number of other companies that are interested,” Klee said.
Pfizer is planning a launch of its first generic version of the diabetes drug Diabetic Lipitor (ELU) in May, and is also planning to launch its second generic version of Lipitor in April. The company is also launching a new drug called Nexium in the US that treats people with frequent heartburn, ulcers and impotence.
While the FDA approved the drugs, the companies also are offering to sell their new generic versions of Lipitor, Viagra and Cialis for $69.99 per month for a total of $74.49. Those will be available as the brand-name drugs and generic equivalents.
“We think the generic version of Viagra, which is currently available as generic Lipitor (Cialis) in the U. S., will have the same effect as the branded Lipitor (Viagra),” Klee said.
“The fact that it is now available in the U. does not mean that it will go into effect in the next six to eight months,” said Dr. David Klee, a urologist at New York’s Lenox Hill Hospital.
In the meantime, Klee said, he’s doing his best to keep up with the increased demand for the drugs. “There are other drugs that are going to be available to me,” Klee said.

The only relief I’ve got is to eat the stuff and go for a walk. But then I don’t realize how many people have had this problem, or that I’ve been sickened and the sinusitis has worsened. I’ve been to an emergency room, and I’ve been told by my doctor that I’ve had it.
I started taking the medication because I couldn’t sit up, so I’ve been having to lie down because of a sore throat and I have to pee a lot. I also don’t know what to do.
